UVa introduces new mobile safety app

The University of Virginia is launching a new security app available to anyone with a UVa email address as well as the general public.

The new UVa Ready app replaces the existing Rave Guarding app and provides users with quick access to school community alerts, safety protocols, and a map of emergency call boxes throughout campus that provide a direct connection to UVa Police.

“We want everyone on or near the property to have access to important safety information so they can be prepared for potential emergencies and crises,” UVa Police Chief Tim Longo said in a statement announcing the new app. “This app is a one-stop shop for everyone in our community to help them feel safer and more informed.”

That announcement also included news that the UVa Police Department has a new name: UVa Police Division. The name change better aligns the existing law enforcement agency with the university’s Department of Safety and Security, the university said. UVa “Community Alerts” will also be called “Safety Alerts” in the future.

“Because both UVA Alerts and Community Alerts are sent out occasionally throughout the year, we have found that there can be some confusion about the differences and urgency of each alert type,” Longo said. “Renaming them to Safety Alerts reinforces that these messages are intended to be educational only and are not immediate calls to action, as is the case with UVA Alerts.”

UVa Ready is now available for download for iOS and Android mobile devices.
