Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has updated its App Store fee structure for developers in the European Union to comply with the European Commission’s recent Digital Markets Act rules.
The changes focus on how app developers use Apple’s App Store, EU link to the Internet to show users alternative payment methods.
“Developers can communicate and promote offers for purchases available at a destination of their choosing,” Apple explained. “The destination can be an alternative app marketplace, another app, or a website, and can be accessed outside of the app or through a web view displayed in the app.”
Under the previous structure, developers were limited in their ability to redirect users to alternative websites where they had to pay for in-app purchases or a fee of up to 17% or more to link.
To comply with DMA regulations, Apple has also adjusted its commission fees (Store Services Fee). The changes result in lower fees for app developers using Apple’s App Store.
For those operating under the EU Alternative Terms, there is an initial 5% acquisition fee and a 10% store service fee. For those who qualify for the App Store Small Business Program, the store service fee is reduced to 5%.
Under standard terms, the initial acquisition fee is 5% and the store service fee is 20%, or 7% for App Store Small Business Program members.
