Discover your family time plans this month with the best kid-friendly things to do in and around Houston for September 2024.

School is back in session, but that doesn’t mean the fun and games are over. This September in Houston brings plenty of excitement for the kids, from F1 racing and Kemah’s end-of-summer fireworks to a Kidz-Bop concert, Sesame Street Live and more.

Here are over a dozen fun things to do with your kids in Houston this month.

  • Labor Day drone show in downtown Galveston | Sunday, September 1st | FREE – End your summer at a free, family-friendly party in historic downtown Galveston that ends with a 12-minute drone show lighting up the skies above Saengerfest Park. Secure your spot for live entertainment starting at 7:30 p.m. The drone show starts at dusk – around 8:30 p.m.
  • End of Summer Fireworks at Kemah Boardwalk | Sunday, September 1 Kemah Boardwalk is saying goodbye to summer with a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the sky. Rides and attractions are open all day, with live music on the plaza starting at 1 p.m. and a spectacular fireworks display starting at 9:30 p.m. Families can also take part in the Boardwalk Beast Fireworks Cruise, which can be purchased on-site for $40 (boarding begins at 9 p.m.).
  • Family Sundays at Minute Maid Park | Sundays, September 1, 8 and 22 – Sunday home games at Minute Maid Park are Family Sundays, where young fans of the ‘Stros can cheer on their favorite players and families can enjoy Grand Slam specials, including family 4-packs with four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas. Times vary.
  • Labor Day Fun at the Lone Star Flight Museum – Say goodbye to summer with free hot dogs, chips and a drink as all ages can enjoy STEM experiences, flight simulators, drawings, crafts and more, as well as DC-3, Howard 250 and Rover tours from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. $10. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Little Meteorologist: Flight game for toddlers at the Lone Star Flight Museum | Saturday, September 7 – Bring your future meteorologists and pilots to the Toddler Terminal for an hour of developmental playtime, where their curiosity can be stimulated through hands-on activities. Tickets for a parent and toddler are $12; $10 for members. Additional guests ages 5 and up are $10 each. All tickets include museum admission after playtime; 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
  • Red Bull Showrun in Discovery Green | Saturday September 7th For one day only, the Red Bull Showrun is coming downtown, showcasing two F1 championship cars revving their engines and racing up and down the iconic Discovery Green. The free entry outdoor exhibition will be hosted by legendary British racing legend David Coulthard and current Red Bull Junior driver Arvid Lindblad. People can also look forward to musical entertainment, a DJ battle during the race and a free fan zone for all ages with merchandise, F1 racing simulators, food trucks and more. 12pm-2pm.
  • Kids’ Hikes at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center | Mondays, September 9-23 Designed for children ages 18 months to 4 years, the 45-minute “Tyke Hikes” invite children on an interactive nature exploration through the arboretum where they can learn more about the natural world around them, from themed hikes to stroller-friendly hikes along the arboretum’s beautiful trails. $7 per child; free for members and children 17 months and younger. Hike daily at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
    HALS Public Train Ride Day at Zube Park | Saturday, September 21 | FREE
    Amateur conductors can drive locomotives at Zube Park on the third Saturday of most months, when the Houston Area Live Steamers offer free rides to the public. All ages are welcome and no reservations are required. Just get in line and enjoy the 12- to 15-minute train ride. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Mid-Autumn Festival at the Children’s Museum Houston | Saturday, September 21 The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association and the Children’s Museum Houston are once again co-hosting the Mid-Autumn Celebration with family-friendly activities like lantern making and storytelling, a Soaring Phoenix Lion Dance, fun costume contests and more. Included with museum admission, which is $19.95; $17.95 for those 65 and older; free for members and children 11 months and younger. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Pirate and Mermaid Day at Woodlands Children’s Museum | Saturday, September 21 Come aboard the Woodlands Children’s Museum’s version of the Jolly Roger and search for hidden treasures on this pirate and mermaid adventure. Kids can enjoy meet-and-greets with pirates and Princess Ariel, as well as storytime and more. Event included in admission. $9; free for children under 12 months. 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Mystical Mermaids at the Children’s Museum Houston | Saturday, September 28 Little ones can enjoy magical, mystical stories and meet Disney’s Ariel. Children ages 5 and up can also sign up to make their own underwater globe. The mermaid experience is included in general admission. Story time is at 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Kidz Bop: Live 2024 in concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion | Saturday, September 28 The talented Kidz Bop Crew sings and moves to your favorite pop songs, including hits like “Shake it Off,” “Dance Monkey,” “Old Town Road” and more. Starting at $29.50, but you can find cheaper, better, or hard-to-get seats on the online ticket resale market. 6:00 p.m.
  • Sesame Street Live! Say hello at the Smart Financial Centre | Sunday, September 29 – Little fans can hang out with Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Cookie Monster and their other favorite Sesame Street characters at this fun song and dance show. Tickets start at $29 for ages 1 and up. Families can add on experiences, from VIP lounge to photo opportunities. 2 p.m.
