Central Ohio schools close early and shut down due to heat and power outages

Some schools in central Ohio are ending classes early or closing entirely this week as extreme heat and power outages cause problems in the region.

This comes as all of central Ohio is under a heat advisory this week, with temperatures in Columbus expected to reach a high of 94 degrees on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service’s Wilmington office.

Due to the heat, Lancaster City Schools announced a two-hour early closure for high school students on Tuesday and Wednesday. A decision will be made on Wednesday as to whether the early closure will continue for the rest of the week, according to a Facebook post. All other schools will continue to operate on their normal schedule. Lancaster City Schools could not immediately be reached for comment.

The NWS predicts high temperatures around 35 degrees Celsius for the rest of the week.

Other schools in eastern Franklin and Fairfield County have also announced closures due to power outages. STEM Middle at Baldwin Road Junior High, part of the Reynoldsburg City School District in Franklin County, was closed Tuesday due to a power outage that affected the HVAC systems and kitchen, according to a Facebook post from the district.

On Monday, Pickerington Local Schools announced that Pickerington High School North in Fairfield County would dismiss students early due to a power outage in the school building. The district later posted on Facebook that power had been restored and classes would resume as usual on Tuesday.
