The British premiere of A night with Janis Joplin, The musical, which opened on Broadway in 2013, is currently celebrating its UK premiere at the Peacock Theatre, home of Sadler’s Wells in London’s West End.

Mary Bridget Davies, who was nominated for a Tony for her Broadway work, reprises her role as the late rock icon Janis Joplin. Sharon Sexton (bat From Hell – The Musical, Mamma Mia!) shares the role with Davies, with Davies appearing in the evening performances and Sexton appearing in the matinees.

They are joined by Kalisha Amaris, Georgia Bradshaw, Choolwe Laina Muntanga and Danielle Steers, who play The Joplinaires and represent pioneers such as Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith as well as Joplin’s backing singers.

Randy Johnson, the author of the book, returns to direct, choreography is by Patricia Wilcox, music direction and musical supervision is by Lestyn Griffiths, casting is by Anne Vosser, Allison Coyne is associate director.

The musical journey celebrates not only Joplin, but also her greatest musical influences, including trailblazers such as Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, all of whom inspired Joplin to become one of rock’n’roll’s greatest legends. Audiences can expect to hear Joplin’s favorite songs such as “Piece of My Heart,” “Cry Baby,” “Me and Bobby McGee” and more.

A night with Janis Joplin was first produced in 2011 and toured for two years before opening at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre in September 2013. The production had 22 previews and 140 regular performances, and received a Tony nomination for Davies. The production has since toured the United States and was also performed in Japan at the Tokyo International Forum Hall in 2022.

A night with Janis Joplin is produced by Michael Cohl, Tony Smith and the estate of Janis Joplin and Jeffrey Jampol for Jam, Inc., with UK management by MPSI Ltd.
