Four Danville nonprofit youth organizations join forces to help better together

Four Danville youth nonprofits will now share resources after signing a memorandum of understanding. The Boys and Girls Club, Big Brother Big Sister, Danville’s Salvation Army and Danville Church and Community Tutorial are all part of this new association.

Gary Terry, CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Danville, said he is the mastermind behind this project. He tells us what this association is all about.

“The children are our target audience, but we all do something different, so it didn’t make sense for us to operate within that circle. We needed to work together so that we could address the children’s needs holistically, not independently,” Terry said.

Currently, the organizations share resources in the form of venues and buses. He mentioned that this is to help solve the funding and transportation issues they all face.

“Just last week we had an event for everyone here because Boys and Girls is the only place with a gym,” Terry added.

According to Terry, they are also trying to recruit the Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority.

He said the aim was to reach out to youth in every sector.

“If a child is struggling with housing or food security, they are less likely to want a mentor or tutoring,” Terry said.

He hopes that in a few years all the organizations will be under one roof so that the children no longer have to travel all over town to get what they need.
