Cleveland and Akron are among dozens of Ohio airports receiving millions in federal grants. See what the money is being spent on.

WASHINGTON, DC – Northeast Ohio airports will receive more than $5 million in grants from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to improve their infrastructure, part of nearly $500 million approved nationwide this year.

According to U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport will receive $2,625,000 to design new wildlife fencing and gates and the Akron-Canton Regional Airport Authority will receive $2,703,150 to replace runway lighting.

“Ohio’s airports are critical infrastructure that supports travel and commerce in our state,” said a statement from Brown, a Cleveland Democrat, who announced the grants. “These investments will improve the safety and operations of Northeast Ohio’s airports and make travel easier for Ohio families and businesses.”

Grants from the program awarded to other Ohio airports include:

  • $4,790,774 for Wood County Regional Airport to expand runways and taxiways and install new lighting.
  • $1,782,322 for the Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport to purchase new snow removal equipment.
  • $437,400 for Pickaway County Memorial Airport to build a new aircraft hangar.
  • $354,374 to the City of Middletown to repair a runway at Middletown Regional Airport.
  • $274,180 for Port Bucyrus-Crawford County Airport to replace runway lighting.
  • $152,075 for Fostoria Metropolitan Airport to rebuild a terminal.
  • $144,853 for Huron County Airport to develop a new rotating beacon, lighting system and wind cone. The investment will also allow for the development of new lighting for two of the runways.
  • $133,740 to Gordon K. Bush Ohio University Airport for the construction of a new aircraft hangar and taxiway.
  • $113,805 to Morrow County Airport to replace the airport’s wind cone.
  • $110,250 to the Harrison County Airport Authority and the Harrison County Board of Commissioners to remove obstructions at the Harrison County Airport.
  • $83,142 to the Darke County Board of Commissioners for the construction of a parking lot and replacement of a terminal at the Darke County Airport.
  • $80,320 to Licking County Regional Airport for a parking lot expansion.
  • $74,250 to the City of Urbana to facilitate a study on the feasibility of replacing an existing aircraft hangar at Grimes Municipal Airport.
