Manny Diaz was introduced as Duke football coach on December 9, 2023 at Pascal Field House.
The countdown to the official start of the Manny Diaz era at Duke is still five days away.
Diaz, the longtime defensive-minded coach who recently spent two seasons as defensive coordinator at Penn State, takes over a Duke football program that ranked well in the national polls last season under Mike Elko, who transferred to Texas A&M in the offseason. Prior to his role with the Nittany Lions, Diaz was the head coach of Duke’s ACC opponent Miami.
One of the main topics before the Blue Devils’ training camp was who would be Duke’s starting quarterback this season after Riley Leonard transferred to Notre Dame in the offseason. Will it be Henry Belin? Grayson Loftis? Maalik Murphy? All in all, Diaz named Murphy, who transferred to Duke in the offseason after playing two seasons at Texas where he had two games in the starting lineup, the Blue Devils’ starter for Week 1 against Elon on August 19.
In the conference’s preseason poll, the Blue Devils were picked to finish 11th in the ACC.
