Wausau Newman turns back time with the “new” Holy Name School

WAUSAU, Wisconsin (WSAW) – Newman Catholic Classical School: Holy Name held an open house and blessing Tuesday to celebrate its first year.

The school was originally built in 1948 and closed in the 1980s. Bishop Gerard Battersby of the Diocese of La Crosse led a ceremony and prayer before the open house.

“We are opening a connection, and it is important that we see it as a connection that brings the past and the wisdom of our ancestors into the future,” Battersby said.

The school offers a “classical” education for children from kindergarten through eighth grade. The teaching style emphasizes the liberal arts and places equal emphasis on the development of mind, heart and soul.

“Opening a traditional school is very old and yet new,” said principal Jim Lynch. “There is no technology in the building. We don’t have smartboards or Chromebooks or anything like that.”

Although there is less educational technology, the building has been modernized to be ready to welcome students again. Holy Name received additional security measures, new lighting, storage space, and an elevator.

“They remodeled the whole building to make it look beautiful,” Lynch said.

The school has three teachers and thirty students. Lynch says he hopes and expects future growth.
