Copper Shores supports GLRC’s new John Kivela Center

HANCOCK, MI – The Copper Shores Community Health Foundation has committed $100,000 to Great Lakes Recovery Centers (GLRC) to rehabilitate the John Kivela Center in Negaunee.

The improvements will enable the GLRC team to focus on integrating holistic care for its clients, including women from the Copper Country.

“Clients will experience a holistic approach to care that includes the availability of timely, on-site care,” said Greg Toutant, CEO of GLRC. “Clients can receive help identifying issues related to the social determinants of health, including housing, occupational, transportation and employment needs.”

GLRC provides community resources and services for people recovering from addiction and substance abuse, such as the Ripple Recovery Residents for Women in L’Anse. The John Kivela Center’s services include a continuum of substance use disorder programs, mental health services, child and youth care, integrated medical services, reentry case management, recovery housing, community-based prevention, and foster family recruitment and retention for women in recovery and their children. Services are provided by certified counselors and licensed professionals throughout Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

For many people struggling with addiction in the Copper Country, the resources and tools to get help are far away and require many resources to obtain it. With the changes at the John Kivela Center, these services will be consolidated in one location relatively close to where they live. Although the center is outside the foundation’s service area, GLRC helps over 50 Copper Country women annually with recovery services.

“We are excited and proud to offer a state-of-the-art, dignified treatment environment that enables a holistic approach to care to better meet the diverse needs of people in the real world,” said Toutant. “Being able to do this under one roof contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of our treatment methods, which together create a treatment team dedicated to caring for all in need.”

Like many small and rural communities across the country, Copper Country is often overlooked for funding opportunities and investment projects. This results in systems that push people into poverty, where they are unable to obtain the resources to break cyclical traumas like alcoholism and substance abuse. The team at Great Lakes Recovery Centers helps people recover and maintain sobriety.

GLRC’s efforts to provide comprehensive recovery services are a model for broader change in health services. As our understanding of addiction and substance abuse improves, so does the effectiveness of recovery methods. GLRC’s holistic approach reflects the understanding that addiction is a mental health problem influenced by various life factors and requires comprehensive care from multiple perspectives.

“This is a very significant shift in the way substance abuse is modeled,” said Kevin Store, president and CEO of Copper Shores. “We are proud to be part of this process and contribute to its success.”
