Thunderstorms and much-needed rain move into northeast Indiana tonight

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – **UPDATE 00:03 – While isolated heavy rain, frequent/severe lightning and windy weather will continue due to a weakening storm complex that originated in northeastern Illinois this evening, no severe weather (wind speeds over 58 mph, heavy hail, risk of tornadoes) is expected overnight. Thunderstorms are possible again Wednesday afternoon.

**UPDATE: 10:30 p.m. – There are currently no warnings in place as the storm complex currently moving through northwest Indiana has weakened significantly. Still, heavy rain, wind, and lightning will accompany it as it moves south and east toward northeast Indiana. There is some uncertainty about how much of this system will hold together, as areas west of Fort Wayne have the best chance of some heavy downpours, but the city and eastern regions could be lacking moisture.

Although the severe weather warning remains in effect, nothing I am currently seeing on the radar leads me to believe that the severe weather threat is increasing. In fact, I would expect the current warning to be lifted within the next hour or two.

Previous discussion as of 20:30 Tue – A thunderstorm complex has formed in northeastern Illinois this evening, and some forecasts and radar data suggest that a broader, more organized thunderstorm front could form over the next few hours.

There is a possibility of thunderstorms that could produce strong, gusty winds (approximately 40 mph) west of Fort Wayne later this evening (10 p.m. to 1 a.m.), but this complex should weaken significantly by the time it reaches northeast Indiana.

Due to the possibility of at least a low probability of strong to moderate storms, the National Weather Service has issued a WARNING OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS for all areas west of Fort Wayne until 2 a.m. (these warnings usually expire much earlier than their original expiration time).

This story will be updated throughout the evening with the latest developments
