These five apps will take your phone photos and videos to a whole new level

YouTube video

Smartphones have come a long way and are our preferred tool for taking photos and videos on the go. As a hobbyist photographer, I often don’t even bring my DSLR with me when hiking and traveling, relying instead on my phone for those occasional shots. There are also many apps that will make your phone photography and videography even better; they’re even magazine cover worthy. In his video, Jared Collins shares five of his favorite apps that will be game-changers for all of us who rely on our phones.

Lightroom Mobile

Many of you probably already use Lightroom Mobile. Jared swears by its comprehensive editing features and seamless integration into his desktop workflow. He also appreciates the ability to shoot in raw format directly from the app, which gives him unprecedented control over his images.

Sunseeker

Sun Seeker is Jared’s favorite app for planning outdoor shoots. It provides real-time information on the sun’s position and helps you determine the best time of day to capture stunning images. The 3D view is especially useful for visualizing the sun’s path throughout the day.

Frame

Cadrage has been a game changer for Jared, especially when it comes to scouting locations. By entering the specifications of his camera and lenses, he can visualize how different focal lengths will frame a scene, ensuring he has the right equipment for the shot. Although it’s more aimed at cinematographers, it can be a great tool for photographers too.

LSP Evo (Light Spectrum Pro Evo)

Jared relies on LSP Evo to achieve accurate white balance in his photos and videos. The app’s advanced algorithms analyze the ambient light and set the correct white balance, eliminating the guesswork and producing consistent results.

Weather app

This should go without saying, but many of us forget to check the weather before an outdoor shoot or hike (yes, I’m one of “many of us”). As a responsible adult, Jared always checks the weather report before planning a shoot. A reliable weather app will help you adapt to changing conditions, avoid bad weather, and make sure you’re prepared for any surprises. Jared suggests finding your favorite weather apps and always combining multiple ones, as they can make mistakes.

Bonus App: Unscripted

Unscripted is a valuable resource for portrait photographers. It’s your posing assistant and could be especially useful if you’re a bit shy and awkward around people but still interested in portrait photography. Jared uses it to find inspiration and avoid awkward posing situations, and makes sure his subjects feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

Do you use any of these apps in your phone photoshoots? I rely on Snapseed for quick edits and Lightroom Mobile for slightly more sophisticated workflows. I also check the weather in AccuWeather from time to time – usually when I’m caught in a heavy downpour in the middle of the woods. But that’s a story for another time. 🙂
