Jerod Mayo, following Mike Florio’s advice, demands ,000 bill for Patriots after rookie HC messes up Drake Maye’s future

When the New England Patriots signed Jacoby Brissett, there was speculation that he would be the team’s starter in the 2024 season. However, in his final two preseason games, backup QB Drake Maye surprised everyone by outshining Brissett. Well, that would have scared off many, including the coach who initially favored a third-round pick as the frontrunner.

However, the truth is that as a coach, Jerod Mayo is seen as the representative of the team, so his mistake caused a stir on social media, with many mocking the new HC, including Mike Florio, who also gave him some advice.

In a recent episode of Sunday Night Football on NFL on NBC, Mike Florio and Devin McCourty discussed Jerod Mayo’s comments about the “TRUE” QB competition. During the show, Florio recalled that Mayo had previously said about Drake Mayo: “He is currently the second best QB in the squad” to Jacoby Brissett. But after Maye improved his game in the preseason battles, where he “completed 13 of 20 passes for 126 yards and one touchdown”, Mayo, about Florio, “contradicted himself“, saying: “At this point, Drake has surpassed Jacoby. When Florio told this, he laughed at HC’s statements and advised that as the leader of the Pats, he now needs a speech coach.

To explain his point of view, Florio added that when discussing these two statements with those around him in the room, he “…someone said that’s why you get coach talk. And people complain about coach talk, but when you get coach talk, you don’t get one thing one day and another the next day.” Therefore, Florio pointed out that this inconsistency shows why many coaches still believe in “Coach’s speech” to give general answers and avoid fuss or possible contradictions.

McCourty added that Mayo, who is new to the role, is now learning how to handle media interactions and the weight his words carry. So, in her opinion, Mayo should train himself to become a speech coach, which costs about $65,000 on average, to avoid making two contradictory statements in a row and messing up Maye’s future.

Still, Mayo may not hire a speech coach. His team will soon need a starter. And given recent incidents and news, it seems Drake Maye still has that one chance!

Who will Jerod Mayo choose as his starter?

After two preseason games, coach Jerod Mayo said Jacoby Brissett was still QB 1. However, the final preseason game on Sunday changed his perspective somewhat. Maye’s 126 yards, a touchdown, his early lead and his cleat problem, all of that, including Brissett’s injury, forced Mayo and the Patriots to rethink their decision. In a press conference, he revealed: “…that’s a real competition. I’d say at this point Drake has surpassed Jacoby.“But the question is who will be the next new starter for the Foxborough team in the upcoming 2024 battle, which will be more intense compared to the previous season. Meanwhile, comparing the two quarterbacks, Maye “has followed Brissett in all three games, playing 66 snaps and completing 21 of 34 passes for 192 yards with one touchdown and zero interceptions. In addition, he has recorded seven carries for 32 yards and one touchdown.

While Brissett, on the other hand, “started all three of the team’s preseason games, played a total of 27 snaps and finished the game with 5 of 14 passes for 36 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception..” So, according to statistics, Maye seems to be ahead of Brissett when looking at preseason stats and overall performance. However, the regular season will be more competitive and demanding than those preseasons and so it is yet to be decided who can handle that pressure. Meanwhile, Brissett, who is overcoming his shoulder injury, thinks: “In my opinion, I am (as of week 1). I haven’t heard anything different, so that’s what I have to assume..”

So does that mean Brissett will start? So far, head coach Jerod Mayo has only confirmed: “I would say by Monday night we should know who the quarterback is…I think Monday, Monday-Tuesday we probably need to know who it is.
