BankDhofar chooses Entrust to provide cardholders with digital cards and in-app payment features for various banking offerings

BankDhofar, the second largest bank in Oman, has selected Entrust, a global leader in identity-centric security solutions for governments and enterprises worldwide, to implement its Digital Card Solution (DCS) to provide customers with digital card capabilities for both the bank’s Islamic and conventional banking applications.

BankDhofar is the fastest growing bank in the country. With over 124 branches and a digital banking strategy, it is “closest to the customer”. To add digital payment capabilities to its conventional and Islamic banking applications, BankDhofar has implemented Entrust Digital Card Solution for tap-to-pay services and tokenization enablement. This makes BankDhofar one of the first banks in Oman to offer tap-to-pay services to its customers.

With the launch of the innovative mobile payment service “Dhofar-Pay”, customers can easily make transactions using their smartphone without the need for a physical debit card, providing a seamless payment experience. In the first few weeks after the launch, the bank’s customers expressed satisfaction with the security, convenience and ease of use of Dhofar-Pay. They easily activated the service through the bank’s application. The overall experience was described as “smooth”.

Dhofar-Pay allows users to securely add their existing Visa debit and credit card details to their NFC-enabled Android phones. Once set up, the smartphone becomes a digital card that enables contactless payment transactions by simply tapping on POS terminals. This innovative solution eliminates the need to carry physical cards and provides customers with a seamless payment experience.

With the Entrust Digital Card Solution and NFC Issuer Wallet for Visa VTS and MDES, BankDhofar now enables NFC payments for Android devices within its conventional and Islamic banking applications for debit and credit transactions. Android users can now use the existing mobile banking apps as a digital payment wallet and pay in-store using their phone.

In addition, the bank will soon also introduce the ability to transfer the card from the banking app directly to Apple Pay and Samsung Pay digital wallets. iOS and Samsung users will be able to transfer their BankDhofar cards directly to third-party wallets and pay for in-store and e-commerce purchases from them.

“BankDhofar is committed to leveraging and implementing the latest technological solutions that help make banking easier and better for customers and meet their evolving needs. We were one of the first banks in Oman to introduce tap-to-pay services and will continue to lead in this direction with tokenization services,” said Bilal Faiz Al Raisi, AGM and Head of Cards and Bancassurance at BankDhofar.

“It has been a pleasure to work with an agile and digitally transforming bank like BankDhofar. We achieved great success with our implementation and launch within 3-4 months, enabling the bank to meet its deadlines in line with its digital strategy. We look forward to expanding our relationship with BankDhofar as a trusted partner of one of the largest banks in the country,” said Tony Ball, President of Payments & Identity at Entrust.

The service was launched in March 2024 and is available to BankDhofar customers in Oman.
