Point-In-Time survey figures published

EL PASO COUNTY — According to this year’s Point In Time (PIT) count, there are more than 1,100 people experiencing homelessness in El Paso County.

A total of 1,146 people were homeless in January, 156 fewer than the year before. Of these people, 259 were considered homeless, 115 fewer than the year before.

The remaining 887 people slept in emergency shelters or temporary accommodation.

Notably, the count included 149 families with a total of 451 people considered homeless, an increase of 12% from 2023.

Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade responded to the results of this survey. He made the following statement:

“It is encouraging to see the results of the recent Point-in-Time Count, which shows that the number of homeless people in Colorado Springs has decreased over the past year. This is the second year in a row that we have seen declining numbers, and I believe this is a testament to the effectiveness of our community’s collective efforts to address homelessness in our city. Despite these results, homelessness remains one of our enduring challenges. It is a problem that weighs heavily on our residents, business owners, and our community.

Addressing issues like homelessness and public safety are community problems and require community solutions. We are committed to investing in housing, supportive services, and preventative solutions. We are funding additional enforcement efforts and focusing on cleanup efforts. We also want to expand street outreach and advocate for additional resources to maintain and grow the network of providers we actively partner with to implement solutions.

There is still much work ahead, and yet I am proud of the progress we have made so far. I am confident that through our collective impact, we will accomplish even more. Let us continue to work together to create a city where homelessness is rare, transient, and non-recurring.”
