Hair experts reveal when you should “only” wash your hair

Every hair type, whether curly, coarse, afro or oily, has unique characteristics that require special care.

Finding the right care for your hair can be a gamble and many people default to washing their hair daily, which is not always recommended by experts.

Saul Meskin, the hair care expert at Foxy Locks, once told Express.co.uk: “Your hair is connected to your scalp by a follicle and that follicle is connected to glands that produce vitamins and moisture that goes into the hair.” He warned that washing too often can strip away these vital natural oils, thereby robbing hair of its moisture and life.

Hair health adviser Simone Thomas of Simone Thomas Wellness also warns about the dangers of washing your hair too often, pointing out that a lack of oil is just “one problem.” Speaking about the negative effects, she mentioned that “dandruff and a dry, itchy scalp” are common consequences of over-washing, in addition to brittle hair that breaks easily, reports the Express.

So how often should you actually wash your hair? Respected celebrity hairdresser Jon Hala strongly advises: “You should only wash your hair when it is absolutely necessary.”

He further recommends: “The general recommendation is to wash your hair a maximum of once or twice a week, (but) I would say that it should only be washed when the hair is visibly oily.”

An itchy scalp and visible dandruff are signs that you may need to consider a cleanse.

John stressed the importance of natural oils for a healthy scalp, saying, “Remember that for a healthy scalp you need natural sebum for healthy hair follicles and that washing your hair too often reduces this.”

Explaining how to reduce the frequency of washing your hair, Simone advised: “You can take an all-or-nothing approach, but as with so many things in life, if you make gradual changes you will develop a new, healthy habit that your hair will thank you for.”

She offers practical advice for anyone who washes their hair daily: “If you wash your hair daily, try to do it every other day, with the goal of washing your hair two to three times a week in the long term.”

For those worried about greasy hair between washes, Simone mentioned that there are excellent dry shampoos that help absorb excess oil and add volume to greasy-looking hair.

To keep hair clean for longer, she recommends changing products, as this can slow down the greasing process and thus reduce the number of hair washes needed.

Finally, Jon advises using “light” shampoos and fewer oil-based styling products to prevent hair from becoming weighed down by the accumulation of oil and dirt.

Celebrity stylist Cally Borg, known for her work with Amanda Holden, has suggested a home remedy for anyone suffering from oily hair: “You could try an apple cider vinegar rinse as a home remedy, where you dilute the vinegar at a ratio of 1:3 and rinse your hair with it once a week. The idea behind it is to detoxify and balance your hair and scalp.”

In addition, she recommended EveryGreen’s “antioxidant” products for their salon-recognized effectiveness in combating oily hair, highlighting their ability to balance the scalp’s pH and maintain cleanliness without stripping the hair of essential oils.
