Senior Citizens Center hosts event to honor influential senior citizens from the region, nominations are being accepted

The Senior Center is once again presenting the Silver Salute Awards to honor local seniors who have made a lasting impact in the areas of education, faith or inspiration and who have provided significant support to other seniors (and the public can now submit nominations). The awards ceremony will also feature “Memory Lane Bing” – aptly named because it offers attendees a taste of the past with photos of iconic local landmarks.

The Senior Community Center of Owensboro-Daviess County will host “Celebrating Our Past, Building Our Future” on October 3 at 6 p.m. at the Blessed Mother Community Hall (601 East 23rd Street).

Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased in advance at the Senior Community Center (1650 West Second Street) between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday or online at seniorcenterodc.com/donate. Tickets include a catered meal, music, awards presentations and bingo.

“Memory Lane Bingo uses local place names instead of the usual numbers, which is guaranteed to take you back to the Owensboro and Daviess County of the past,” said Becky Barnhart, executive director of the Senior Community Center. “Instead of the usual bingo balls, a slideshow celebrating places from our community’s past is used. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed with the prizes.”

The evening will also see the revival of the long-standing tradition of honoring senior community members with the Silver Salute Awards. Nominations will be accepted in four categories of recognition:

This award is given to an individual age 60 or older who has made a significant contribution to others through their work in the field of education. This award honors those who have enriched the lives of others through the gift of teaching or education in any capacity.

This award is given to an individual aged 60 or older who has made a significant contribution to others through their faith community. This category honors those whose lives embody the ideals of their spiritual beliefs.

This award is given to an individual age 60 or older who has made a positive contribution to the life of another as a family member, friend, professional mentor, or in another capacity. This category also includes individuals who have served our country through their military service.

This award is given to an individual of any age who has made a significant contribution to supporting or honoring seniors in Owensboro-Daviess County. This award recognizes the legacy of the late Elizabeth Munday, who was instrumental in establishing a Senior Community Center dedicated to providing services, support, resources, learning opportunities and activities to seniors in our community.

Silver Salute nomination forms are available online here or can be picked up at the Senior Community Center. Nominations must be submitted by September 15. Nominees will be notified in advance and invited to the event as guests of honor.
