Could a former Ohio State wide receiver lead the NFL in receiving yards this season?

Garrett Wilson was a fantastic wide receiver for the Ohio State Buckeyes and, not surprisingly, immediately became his team’s best wide receiver in the NFL. In each of his first two seasons with the New York Jets, Wilson reached 1,000 receiving yards.

With veteran star quarterback Aaron Rodgers joining the Jets in 2023, expectations were very high in New York. The Achilles tendon injury that Rodgers suffered in the season opener threw the entire season off track. The Jets then had a change at the quarterback position and finished the season with a record of 7-10. Although Wilson tried to catch passes from four different starting quarterbacks, he still managed to catch 95 passes for 1,042 yards and three touchdowns.

Aaron Rodgers is back, and the Jets are hoping he can stay healthy and get on the field this time. Garrett Wilson has been dominant so far in training camp, with Rodgers throwing him the football. Could he lead the NFL in receiving yards this season?

The opportunity is absolutely there and if all goes well for the Jets offense, Wilson could definitely reach that lofty goal.

Wilson’s biggest competition is likely Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, Tyreek Hill, Amon-Ra. St. Brown, CeeDee Lamb and Davante Adams. The Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders have some questionable quarterback situations, which could make things more difficult for Jefferson and Adams. CeeDee Lamb is also currently holding off due to the lack of urgency in contract negotiations with the Dallas Cowboys. Chase, Hill and St. Brown all have a serious chance to lead the NFL in receiving yards, but Wilson should still be one of the favorites.

The Jets have one of the best secondaries in the NFL right now, and Wilson still manages to give them some problems in practice. This week, the Jets defense got a break from defending Wilson thanks to joint practices with the Washington Commanders. The Jets then posted a video on social media of Wilson scoring two touchdowns and making a sliding catch near the sideline. Tyrod Taylor, not Aaron Rodgers, was also the quarterback throwing the football. If this is a glimpse into the future, then Wilson will be a nightmare for defense in 2024.

Wilson is already considered one of the top 15 receivers in the NFL, but this season could potentially put him in the top 10 or top 5. His connection with Rodgers should be interesting to watch.
