Sharks Cove parking lot reopens after emergency repairs

HONOLULU (KHON2) – The City and County of Honolulu have announced that the Sharks Cove parking lot at Pupukea Beach Park has reopened early following emergency repairs to a damaged retaining wall.

The project, which began on July 29, was originally scheduled to be completed on November 25, but was terminated prematurely on August 27.

The focus of the repair work was to strengthen a crumbling section of the dry-stacked rock face.

The project included reinforcing the wall with new bricks and mortar, which serves as a support for the park’s vehicular and pedestrian access road.

Additional work included filling, compacting, asphalting and painting parking markings.

These improvements are intended to increase the stability of the area and prevent future erosion.

The park access road and parking lot at Waimea Bay were reopened to the public after a final inspection on August 26.

However, the parking lot on the Kahuku side will remain closed until the striping crews finish striping, which is scheduled to be completed later this week, weather permitting.
