What to do if you’re still without power in Northeast Ohio

NORTHEAST, Ohio (WOIO) – While thousands remain without power following Tuesday’s storms, some Northeast Ohio cities and businesses are offering help.

City Councilman Charles Slife said some of the city’s recreation centers would be available as cooling centers with charging capabilities, Wi-Fi and limited food from the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.

The locations are listed below:

  • Michael J. Zone Rec at West 65th Street and Lorain Road.
  • Cudell Rec at West Boulevard and Detroit Road
  • Gunning still has no strength

Residents in need of oxygen are asked to contact the fire department for emergency care, according to an Aug. 7 Facebook post from Parma Heights firefighters.

The fire station is located at 6184 Pearl Road.

If you do not have transportation to the fire department, please call 440-885-1717 and a firefighter will come to your home.

Cuyahoga County Public Libraries offer Wi-Fi, electricity and air conditioning to people without power.

The opening hours are listed below:

  • Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.
  • Sunday from 1pm to 5pm

University Heights City Hall announced on its website that libraries will be open for people to cool off, relax, read and recharge.

The University Heights branch is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The same post on the website stated that residents can visit Purvis Park to shower during regular business hours without a pass.

The swimming pool is open Monday to Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The following municipal facilities are open.

  • Mentor City Center
  • Morton Pool – Saturday, August 10th is the last day of the 2024 swimming season.
  • Black Brook Golf Course
  • Wildwood Cultural Center
  • Walsh Park
  • Name of the cemetery

The following municipal facilities are only operating to a limited extent.

  • Mentor Senior Center – Power has been restored to this facility and it is open today as a cooling and charging station for all Lake County residents from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Lunch is available today for those 55 and older. The center will also be open this Saturday, August 10th and Sunday, August 11th from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Senior Center will return to full operation on Monday, August 12th. There will be no classes or activities until then.
  • Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve & Marina – No power or phone. All trails closed due to downed power lines.
  • Mentor Community Recreation Center – Power has been restored to the facility and will reopen at noon today. Classes will resume on Saturday, August 10, 2024.

The following municipal facilities will remain closed until further notice:

  • Mentor Ice Arena
  • Swimming pool at the Civic Center

The Geauga Family YMCA opens its doors to anyone in need of a cooling center, access to showers, power for equipment, and refreshments such as bottled water, fresh fruit, and juice boxes.

Planet Fitness announced Friday that in response to the tornadoes, it will allow members and non-members access to its facilities until the power is back on. Staff will also hand out bottled water.

FirstEnergy announced Thursday that any customers still without power can pick up a free bag of ice and two gallons of water at local Giant Eagle stores.

The announcement comes a day after the company said power may not be fully restored until August 14.

“Customers do not need to show their bill or other receipt to receive their free water and ice,” the company wrote in a press release.

Customers can pick up the goods at the following Giant Eagle locations.

  • Strongsville Market District
  • Route 82 and I-77 Giant Eagle
  • Day trip to the giant eagle
  • Giant Eagle in Biddulph Plaza
  • Giant eagle on Parma-Broadview Road

Cleveland

Cleveland will be conducting a special trash collection for all types of items this weekend. City Councilman Charles Slife said residents should put out their trash cans Friday night along with severe weather trash, as trash collection will be running throughout the city throughout the weekend.

The regular bulky waste collection week begins on Monday, but due to the storm the established rules will be relaxed.

University Heights

University Heights City Hall has indicated on its website that residents can drop off spoiled food to the University Heights Food Service Department.

The drop-off location is the parking lot on Saybrook Road at Walter Stinson Community Park.

The return point is open on Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • Dial 2-1-1 to be connected to the United Way Help Center if you need food, clothing, shelter, health care, etc.
