Debby in Wayne: Tornado warning extended as rain and wind move in

WAYNE, NJ — The remnants of Debby will hit North Jersey on Friday, bringing tornadoes, damaging winds and flooding throughout the region, the National Weather Service said.

There are currently two warnings in effect for Wayne Township and Passaic County: a tornado warning until 10 p.m. and a wind warning until 11 p.m. The tornado warning was originally scheduled to expire at 2 p.m., but has been extended.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, the region has “a low to moderate risk for severe weather. The greatest danger is damaging winds and the risk of localized tornadoes.” Isolated wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour are possible.

“There is a possibility of isolated to scattered flash flooding late afternoon into the night, along with urban flooding and due to poor drainage,” meteorologists said Friday morning.

As of 2:00 p.m., FirstEnergy (PSE&G) and Jersey Central Power and Light are reporting no major outages in Wayne Township.

According to current river water forecasts, flooding in surrounding rivers and streams is not expected, community officials said.
