A few more showers in the forecast; better chance of rain later in the week

A few showers are forecast for Acadiana at the beginning of the new week, but the chances of rain are likely to increase as the week progresses.

A weak system of low pressure in the upper atmosphere south of the Louisiana coast will continue to move toward East Texas over the next day or two, leaving enough of a weak spot in the atmosphere to maintain the likelihood of showers and thunderstorms for most of the week and most likely into next weekend.

The chance of rain is not likely to be too high at first, ranging between 20 and 30% from Monday to Tuesday. The greatest chance of rain is likely to be near the coast and in coastal communities.

Later this week and beyond, weakness at altitude combined with tropical moisture in the region should bring a greater chance of isolated, predominantly afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

The Acadiana region has been quite dry over the past four weeks, so any rain is welcome.

Further down the road, there are indications that a weak front may move through the region sometime early next week that could give us some relief from the heat and humidity, but until then, we’ll remain on a hot and humid forecast with no storm activity at all.

In the tropics, the central and eastern Pacific remains fairly busy with two hurricanes and the development of another system is likely. The tropics of the Atlantic remain surprisingly quiet as we approach the peak of hurricane season over the next few weeks.

When the Eastern Pacific is busy, the Western Atlantic is usually not. Right now we are only seeing a few weak tropical waves in the Atlantic basin. A better looking wave is expected from the African coast later in the week.

Any day that we can say “it’s quiet in the tropics” at this time of year is a good day!
