A free beacon of hope and safety for the youth of Lenoir County

As students return to school, safety is a top priority, and some parents are turning to youth groups to provide meaningful activities in a safe environment.

This joint effort is taking place right here at The Gate, which works with both the Sheriff’s Office and the Police Department.

Something a parent says is necessary.

“The community and then the fun things that can inspire them in their education and their life goals are of utmost importance for them to grow up healthy and in turn build a healthy community around us,” says Zaaron Williams, parent.

Zaaron Williams, a mother of two boys who recently returned to Lenoir County, says community centers can benefit youth and the area.

The community leaders agree with this.

“If every single person came out and mentored one child, the whole city would change.” says Donna Hardy.

Donna Hardy is the Executive Director of The Gate, a faith-based community center dedicated to empowering youth through faith. Every Tuesday and Friday, they open their doors to children and offer them a meal, tutoring, shoes, and love.

They support at least 60 children of different ages free of charge. Hardy says this has a lasting impact.

“The age is 8 years and up. And I say 8 years and up and I’ll tell you why. Friday night we had kids that I had 10 years ago who are now 24 years old. They still come back to the gate because they say, ‘This is our home.'” says Hardy.

Hardy says all children are free and encourages volunteers, children and churches to come and support.
