A wildcard spot is again under discussion for the Seattle Mariners

Going into Tuesday afternoon’s game, the Seattle Mariners are now 0.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West.

The Mariners – and their fans – undoubtedly want to win the division for the first time since 2001. They would like to secure guaranteed home games in the wild-card round of the playoffs and reward themselves and their fan base that has stuck together this year despite much adversity.

It’s worth noting, however, that there may be another path to the playoffs in 2024: the wild card. Although most fans don’t want to think about the wild card, it’s a big topic again.

The Mariners enter Tuesday’s contest just 2.0 games behind the Kansas City Royals, tied with the Boston Red Sox, and the M’s have a significantly easier schedule than either of those two teams for the rest of the race (according to Tankathon).

It’s worth noting that the Red Sox have the tiebreaker over the Mariners and Royals, but it’s still exciting to see that there is another possible path for the M’s.

We talked about this possibility in more detail on the latest edition of the Refuse to Lose podcast. We also spoke with legendary Seattle Sports radio host Mitch Levy about Victor Robles’ contract extension and what it means, as well as the M’s recent win over the New York Mets.

The Mariners are back in action against the Tigers on Tuesday afternoon at 3:40 p.m. PT.
