Aaron Judge’s 2024 season is somehow better than his 2022 and more: Covering the Bases

We’re already further into August than we were last week, and the Yankees have been just as good since then. Aaron Judge continues to do Aaron Judge things, and New York gets extra power from Austin Wells. Over the weekend, the Yankees took two of three games against Toronto, including a 10th-inning walk-off win on a DJ LeMahieu RBI single. New York’s opening game against the Angels was canceled Tuesday due to rain, but the Yankees managed to split the doubleheader on Wednesday. The Yankees will welcome the Texas Rangers to New York over the weekend before heading to Chicago for an AL Central swing.

Aside from the wins, manager Aaron Boone made headlines when he benched Gleyber Torres after the second baseman failed to hit a potential double. Elsewhere, Judge revealed the details behind his endorsement.

Below you’ll find all the Yankees news from the past week from our national and regional journalists.

Power Rankings: New York Yankees are No. 1

For this week’s edition of the MLB Power Rankings, our writers have highlighted an important new addition to each team, whether it’s a player who can help them win a championship this year or a promising player who can make a difference in the future.

Record: 67-46 (as of Tuesday morning’s rankings)
Last power ranking: 5

Important acquisition: IF/OF Jazz Chisholm Jr.

The Yankees were banking on Chisholm to bring new life to a lineup that had become overly reliant on Juan Soto and Judge. The team was also banking on Chisholm, a 26-year-old who has spent his major league career primarily at second base and center field, to take over the regular third-base duties. So far, so good. Chisholm hit four home runs in his first seven games as a Yankee. He seemed energized by his departure from the Marlins. And he has yet to make a mistake in his six games at third base, a position that now seems to belong to him. — Andy McCullough

Baseball hit

Everything you need to know about the Yankees this week from our national writers and team sportswriters Brendan Kuty and Chris Kirschner.

1. MLB transfer deadline superlatives: Best fits, worst trades, weirdest moves and more

Former MLB general manager Jim Bowden called the Yankees’ deal to sign infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. the best trade of the deadline. He also called Chisholm the best outfielder traded. Not bad.

2. Yankees player Gleyber Torres benched after baserunning error: “I have to get better”

Torres might have had a chance to score a brace if he had run out of the box, but he didn’t and was penalised for it.

3. Yankees’ Aaron Judge somehow has a better season in 2024 than 2022: 4 insights

It’s hard to believe that Judge will have a better season in 2024 than he did in his historic 2022 season, but it’s true.

4. Why Yankees’ Aaron Judge honors Brett Gardner at games: “I don’t want people to forget him”

“Gardy is one of my good friends,” Judge said. “He meant a lot to me and a lot of people in this clubhouse.”

5. Could the Yankees swap Aaron Judge and Juan Soto in the lineup? They’ve thought about it

Juan Soto was frustrated with the Blue Jays intentionally allowing Judge to walk, and Boone may have an idea how to address that.
