USA Gymnastics seemed to be fighting tooth and nail to ensure Jordan Chiles retains her bronze medal in floor exercise at the Paris Olympics.

The American Gymnastics Federation said in a statement on Sunday that new video evidence showed that a request was made to the judges within the deadline set by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), resulting in a change of 0.1 points to Chile’s score.

Chiles moved up from fifth to third place with the score change. Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu lost her place on the podium. The Romanian Gymnastics Federation filed a complaint with CAS (Central Arbitration for Sport) and the referee ruled that the United States’ investigation was four seconds too late and Chile’s score should be reset to 13.666.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had previously announced on Sunday that Chilean had to return her medal.

“USA Gymnastics on Sunday formally submitted a letter and video evidence to the Court of Arbitration for Sport conclusively proving that head coach Cecile Landi’s request for an investigation was submitted 47 seconds after the result was released, within the one-minute time limit required by FIG rule,” the organization said.

USA Gymnastics asked CAS to reinstate Chile’s bronze medal winning score of 13.766.

“The basis for CAS’s decision on Friday to dismiss the investigation was that ‘the investigation submitted on behalf of Ms. Jordan Chiles in the Women’s Floor Exercise Final was made after the expiry of the one-minute time limit under Article 8.5 of the FIG Technical Regulations 2024 and is deemed to be ineffective,'” the organization added.

“Time-stamped video evidence provided by USA Gymnastics on Sunday evening shows that Landi first expressed her request to file an investigation at the investigation table 47 seconds after the result was released, followed by a second statement 55 seconds after the result was originally released.”

USA Gymnastics said the video footage was not available prior to the CAS decision and could not be submitted.

The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) announced on Sunday that it would appeal the CAS ruling.

“We firmly believe that Jordan rightly deserved the bronze medal and that there were serious errors in both the original scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent appeal process by CAS that must be corrected,” the USOPC said.
