Adding a four-star OL won’t save Justin Frye

The Ohio State football team signed a four-star offensive lineman on Saturday to bolster its 2025 recruiting class. Jayvon McFadden chose the Buckeyes, ruling out Florida, Colorado, Penn State and others. He is the 25th member of the Ohio State Buckeyes’ class of 2025 and the third offensive lineman.

McFadden is a 6-foot-5, 295-pound center back from Upper Marlboro, Maryland. McFadden is a promising prospect, but far from perfect. There’s a reason he’s nearly a four-star prospect. Still, Frye considers this a win.

Frye has been criticized for his recruiting approach and poor recruiting performance. He has yet to receive a commitment from a five-star recruit during his time with the Buckeyes and has not proven he can be a top-notch coach on the field.

Let me be clear: I don’t think McFadden is a bad player. I think with the right coaching and development, he can develop into a starter at some point in his college career. He has some good physical tools, he just needs to figure out how to put it all together.

This is more of an indictment of Frye and what he considers a win. Last week, he lost a five-star recruit to Tennessee and another recruit to Georgia Tech. When asked about it, he touted McFadden as some sort of infallible talent who will solve all of Ohio State’s problems.

Frye is the hottest coach around entering this season. If Ohio State doesn’t win the Joe Moore Award for the best offensive line in the country, Frye will likely be sent home next offseason. Depending on what happens, he may not be the only coach leaving the program.
