AEW Dynamite – 08/21/2024: 3 things we loved and 3 things we hated

I have to admit, when Britt Baker was suspended so soon after her return from a really serious health scare, I was worried that this feud would continue into All In. A lot of people, including myself sometimes, don’t think Mercedes Mone cuts a good promo, so thankfully Baker wasn’t off TV for too long. Tonight I felt like things were getting back on track for their match at Wembley, and they patched things up during the opening segment of Dynamite tonight. Tony Schiavone said that both women agreed to no physical violence of any kind when they signed their contracts, but as any wrestling fan knows, there has to be some sort of brawl during a contract signing segment, so of course you could have predicted miles ahead when the mic would be pointed at Kamille’s head and a brief brawl would ensue. But as cliche as it was, it didn’t necessarily bother me. I like Kamille a lot, and even as a mere bodyguard to Mone, her mere presence is intimidating. I want to see more of her, so this section did something in her favor as well.

Baker and Mone had a little battle about their past in women’s wrestling, and this promo video had some pretty good lines from both women. Mone accused Baker of having a “Plan B” (dentistry) when all she’s wanted to do since she was 10 years old was be a wrestler. Baker responded by saying she doesn’t have a “Plan B,” she has “two Plan A’s,” which I thought was an excellent response. Baker made fun of Mone for “limping” to All In last year to sit in the audience on crutches and watch Baker compete. Baker also accused her of saying “You were one of four? I’ve always been one of one,” in reference to Mone’s time as Sasha Banks in WWE in the Four Horsewomen of WWE NXT alongside Becky Lynch, Bayley, and Charlotte Flair. I wrote that line down specifically because it was awesome. It was these witty lines and replies that made me feel like this argument had started again, albeit at the last possible moment, but better late than never, I guess.

Back on the winning track doesn’t mean Baker walks out of this match at All In with Mone’s TBS Championship. However, I would love to see them face off again at All Out, possibly with a stipulation to make things even more exciting. AEW has so little time between pay-per-views, I think they could build on this promo tonight and their match on Sunday to set up an even bigger match at All Out. Ending the feud with what I believe to be an inevitable Mone title retention just doesn’t seem like the end of it all after shots were fired tonight by both champion and challenger.
