Since then he has had a career in the media, but his job at Channel 7 ended last year. The 53-year-old is very critical of the state of the game this year and even went so far as to refuse to watch for four weeks when Peter Wright was suspended for the same period.

Speaking earlier this year, Carey spoke for the first time about why he decided to leave North Melbourne in 2002 rather than apologise to Stevens. Carey was caught cheating with Stevens’ wife Kelli at a party and decided to leave the club in disgrace just a few days later.

Carey admitted he never thought to apologise to Stevens because he simply thought he had to leave the club immediately. “I called (North Melbourne officials) Geoff Walsh and Greg Miller very quickly and called them straight away,” he said.

“The thought was, as they say, fight or flight. But I immediately thought I have to leave. I had no other thought. For those who think I was fired: I wasn’t. I quit immediately. I didn’t think about it. The apology thing never really crossed my mind at the time. It was just, ‘I have to part ways with the club.'”

Carey was captain of the Kangaroos at the time, but sat out the 2002 season before moving to the Adelaide Crows the following year. On the reality TV show SAS Australia in 2003, Carey described the scandal as the “biggest regret” of his life.

“I slept with a teammate’s wife. That’s been haunting me for 20 years,” he said. “The affair is the biggest regret of my adult life. I’ve put a lot of work into it and I’m trying to overcome it. People say people can’t change – you haven’t lived in my shoes if you say people can’t change. People can change, they evolve and I’m a perfect example of someone who was able to evolve.”
