First DC took away Bruce Wayne’s beloved butler, then they took away his home, and now the comic book publisher is destroying an iconic piece Batman lore that is deeply rooted in 45 years of comic book history – Wayne Enterprises. It seems that DC is gradually chipping away at the elements that have defined the Dark Knight for decades, and the question is how much they can remove before Batman is unrecognizable.

DC’s ongoing deconstruction of Batman’s most iconic elements is disturbing, to say the least.

Chip Zdarsky and Tony S. Daniel’s Batman #156 is scheduled for release on November 27, 2024, but until then, fans have a synopsis and cover by Jorge Jiménez that practically confirm that DC is officially destroying Wayne Enterprises.

Jiménez’s cover is as gorgeous as it is devastating. Batman stands with his fists raised to defend himself against a threat off the page. Behind him, Wayne Enterprises burns from top to bottom, dark smoke billowing from the windows. This striking image signals the end of another iconic piece of Batman history. Since his debut in Batman #307 (January 1979), Wayne Enterprises was an integral part of the Dark Knight’s historyappears in various media, including films and television shows. In terms of its influence on Batman’s narrative, it is arguably inferior only to the Batcave and Wayne Manor.

“Wayne Enterprises” is particularly notable because it is the first realistic attempt to explain Batman’s immense wealth. When Bruce Wayne debuted in Detective comics #27 (1939) he was simply described as “wealthy public figure.” It was not until the early 1940s that he was recognized as a millionaire, and it was not until the 1990s that he was officially referred to as a billionaire in mainstream continuity. The introduction of Wayne Enterprises in 1979 provided a plausible explanation for Bruce’s wealth, showing how he amassed and managed his fortune to fund his Batman-related activities.

With so much character history tied to Wayne Enterprises, its destruction is particularly disheartening. Even more worrying, Wayne Enterprises is just the latest victim in DC’s gradual dismantling of the iconic Batman story. In 2019, DC killed Bruce’s pseudo-father and loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth in City of Banes storyline. Alfred was a cornerstone of Batman’s world and his loss was devastating. DC also recently stripped Bruce of his ancestral home, Wayne Manor, and now, with the implied loss of Wayne Enterprises, fans are in for another major blow. DC’s ongoing deconstruction of Batman’s Most of the iconic elements are disturbing, to say the least.
