Agencies get new AI reporting rules from the White House – December deadline — FEDmanager

The Biden administration has released updated guidelines on reporting rules for artificial intelligence (AI).

These guidelines are intended to help agencies through the reporting process by providing deadlines, criteria, and mechanisms for reporting. President Biden’s Executive Order on AI requires agencies to report to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on their use of AI.

Under the policy, agencies must report their AI caseloads to the OMB by December 16, 2024. They must also post a consolidated overview of cases on their agency websites. Cases should use “plain language responses where appropriate” to ensure “readability and transparency” for the public.

The Department of Defense (DOD) and the intelligence agencies are exempt from this deadline.

“Artificial intelligence helps agencies advance their missions and modernize the services we provide to the public,” said Clare Martorana, federal government chief information officer (CIO) and chair of the Chief AI Officers Council. “And with increased AI use comes greater responsibility, which is why the annual inventory of AI use cases is so important. It provides greater transparency to the public and helps maintain trust by demonstrating a commitment to ethical standards, accountability, and responsible AI use.”

Report details

The guidelines set out how authorities should report on AI use cases, including reporting the application name, intended use, results and whether the technology will have an impact on “rights” or “security”.

In addition, agencies must provide detailed information on AI use cases based on the stage of development, such as whether a use involves personal data and whether custom code is required.

In addition, authorities are not allowed to remove retired cases from the inventory but must mark them as no longer in use. However, they can remove cases if they “no longer meet the inclusion criteria.”

In addition, exemptions from the reporting requirement are granted in cases of national security or for research and development purposes.
