What you should know about Aldi

“Our stores are designed to make grocery shopping smarter, faster and easier,” said Jeff Baehr of Frederick, Maryland, vice president of Aldi, in a press release. “We are excited to open our first Aldi store in Waynesboro and introduce local customers to a new, more affordable way to shop.”

“Simple” is a company motto that is also reflected on the Aldi website and includes, among other things, the “simple story of a small family business”, “simple situations in everyday life” and “a simple recipe, quality pays off”.

The philosophy goes back to the early days of the company. The Albrecht family began selling groceries in a small shop in Essen in 1913 and founded the world’s first food discounter in Germany in 1961. Aldi is the abbreviation for Albrecht Discount.

The first US store opened in Iowa in 1976. Today, there are around 2,400 Aldi stores in the United States, including 159 in Pennsylvania, including the new location in Waynesboro, and 67 in Maryland.

Locally, there is an Aldi on Gateway Avenue in Chambersburg and two locations in Hagerstown, one on Dual Highway and the other on Sharpsburg Pike.

The website states: “The rule here is: If it’s not necessary, we don’t do it. Period. End of story. These are our mottos in life. Simplicity at Aldi has one goal: to offer you high-quality products while helping you save money on your grocery shopping.”

The shelves are filled with the most popular groceries, around 90 percent of which are Aldi-exclusive products. In addition to non-perishable foods and frozen foods, the range also includes fresh meat, seafood and fruit and vegetables.

According to the Aldi website, there are also “Aldi Finds,” limited-time specialty items such as household items, seasonal selections, clothing and garden tools.

Aldi is focused on “eliminating everything unnecessary” – and that includes grocery bagging. Cashiers put the items directly into a shopping cart and customers bag them themselves. Customers also pay 25 cents for a shopping cart and get the money back when they return the cart.

The Waynesboro store is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

What is planned for the grand opening?

The first 100 customers will receive a gift bag with a selection of popular Aldi products and a gift card. Shoppers can also enter a sweepstakes during the opening weekend, August 29 – September 1, for a chance to win a $500 gift card.

As part of the grand opening, Aldi will donate $1,000 to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. The donation is part of Aldi’s commitment to donate $150,000 to Feeding America and its partners by 2024 to alleviate hunger in local communities.

In addition to this donation, Aldi will partner with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to ensure excess food is delivered to the local community through the Feeding America Network. Last year, ALDI donated 33 million pounds of food to Feeding America partners across the country.
