Alex Van Pelt notes the ‘biggest thing’ he saw on Patriots’ Drake make

FOXBORO, Massachusetts – Alex Van Pelt, in his first year as offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, is clearly impressed with rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

But reflecting on Maye’s progress since training camp began, one aspect of Maye’s summer has stood out to Van Pelt.

“He’s making progress every day,” Van Pelt said before practice at Gillette Stadium on Thursday. “That’s the most important thing, there’s no regression. He takes things from the previous practice and applies them to the next practice. He’s been really impressive, especially the last few weeks.”

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo and his teammates have said Maye has turned things around since last game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Maye, who performed well in practice against the Eagles when not under the threat of a pass rush, was at his best during the preseason game.

“He made great progress in the game and in training last week,” Van Pelt said, pointing to footwork and timing as areas where he has made significant improvements.

Van Pelt said the Patriots wanted to give Maye more playing time behind the starting lineup. Maye received three competitive snaps behind that group on Wednesday and another six on Thursday behind David Andrews and Co.

“Jacoby,” Van Pelt replied when asked why the Patriots stopped using Maye in the first line of attack. “He’s our starter right now.”

Both Mayo and Van Pelt have kept open the possibility that Maye can overtake Brissett and take the starting spot. Van Pelt said Thursday he was “sure” there was a chance for the “pushing” Maye.
