“It’s easy to care for and also fabulous,” the actress tells PEOPLE at the premiere of “The Good Half” in Los Angeles

Alexandra Shipp loves her natural hair.
At the premiere of her new film on Tuesday, August 13 The good halfThe 33-year-old actress wowed in a patterned dress and a chic hairstyle with hip-length braids.
“I always want to wear natural hair because that’s me,” Shipp told PEOPLE on the red carpet. “Don’t get me wrong, we love blow-drying the hair, but braids and twists hold, and I can wear them as long as I sleep with a scarf or a bonnet on, you know what I mean, girl? It’s low maintenance and also fabulous. So that was kind of my inspiration for it.”
For her ensemble, Shipp chose a halter neck dress by Bode with a red and brown zigzag pattern, off-the-shoulder sleeves and ruffle details.
“I love the idea of giving it structure because I think my character in this film brings a different structure than the rest of the cast and the story,” the actress explained. “And that’s why I wanted to do it, and I wanted to have a punk moment.”

The good half Nick Jonas plays writer Renn Wheeland, who returns to his hometown of Cleveland after years of avoiding his sister Leigh (Brittany Snow), father Darren (Matt Walsh) and stepfather Rick (David Arquette). Shipp plays Zooey, a charming stranger who meets Renn and encourages him to confront his relationships with his family.

The comedy-drama series was directed by Robert Schwartzman and the films will be released in North America on August 16.

Shipp, who starred in the 2023 blockbuster hit Barbieis known for wearing natural hairstyles on the red carpet. Earlier this month, she appeared at the 20th annual HollyShorts Film Festival in Hollywood, California, with cornrows and a single long braid that framed her face on either side.
She paired the intricate style with a seductive black slip and combat boots.
