Twenty years ago, in 2004, the epic duel that most science fiction fans had been waiting for finally took place. It has a great setting that allows for cool action scenes
One of AVPThe greatest strength of was its unique and impressive setting. The research team finds themselves deep beneath the ice of a remote island in an ever-changing temple. Limiting the film to a single location also made the film better. Since we spend 90% of the film in the temple, the setting becomes much more immersive since we have the entire film to explore it.
Yes, the plot is simple… but it works
The cramped surroundings of AVP worked for another reason too: it kept the plot simple. People enter the temple, they realize that it is actually a battlefield, but it is already too late and they are now trapped in a death struggle between aliens and Predators. Sometimes simple is better. Being stuck in an underground death labyrinth created by Predators is a compelling story, and AVP knew that. There was no reason to slow things down or complicate things.
Compare that to newer films like the 2018 The Predatorwhich dealt with the military and cover-ups, Predator-human hybrids, Predator-dog-alien things, a Predator-killing armored suit, and even a whole subplot about autism (who thought this would be a good idea???). The Predator was everywhere. It’s as if 10 screenwriters were competing to write the dumbest Predator The first screenplay ever, and then the executives at 20th Century Fox decided to just combine them all into one movie.
With most movies, more is never better. When you only have an hour and a half, adding more characters and subplots means nothing ever gets enough time to be fully fleshed out. AVPThe simple “survive the deathmatch” plot kept the film simple, grounded, and made everyone’s motives clear. prey was also successful by keeping it simple and returning to the classic cat-and-mouse game that the original Predator so tense and exciting.
Compared to modern action movies, AVP looks great
Unfortunately, The Predator is not the only newer Foreigner And Predator Film that was shit. Unfortunately, it is just one of many. Compared to a large majority of newer films, AVP holds up damn well.
First was AVPown sequel, 2007 AVP: Requiem. I saw this movie in the theater and was so bored I couldn’t wait for it to end. In fact, it’s so bad I barely remember the plot. The only thing I remember is a random scene in a high school swimming pool and that two-thirds of the movie was so dark I couldn’t tell what was going on. Based on the 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s clear I’m not the only one who hated the movie.
Then there is 2010 Predatorsin which a group of people are thrown into an unfamiliar forest. The shocking twist: It’s actually a hunting ground for Predators, and they are the prey. First of all, this is a blatant rip-off. AVP. Secondly, Predators was an action film that forgot the exciting roots of the franchise. Without the elements of suspense and horror, the Yautja are surprisingly boring antagonists, which Predators quite sleepy.
Also on the junk list is 2017 Alien: Covenant. After 2012 Prometheus polarized critics and audiences because it deviated so far from a traditional Foreigner plot, everyone was promised a return to the old form with FederalInstead, we got a movie about black slime and more of Michael Fassbender’s unbearably annoying android David.
Every single problem in Federal was caused by the stupidity of the human crew. They literally do the wrong thing every. single. time. People are so stupid you can’t wait until they’re all dead. Oh, and we finally see the classic Xenomorph again for a whole 15 minutes, but it’s all so rushed and sloppy that it’s not scary and feels more like an insult to the franchise.
I am happy to see this FederalRotten Tomatoes audience rating has dropped to 55%. Just as time has shown, AVP is not so bad, it is also given Federal the criticism it deserves. Compared to the crap that has been released in the last 20 years, AVP just looks better and better.
The film has a solid female protagonist who was not Ripley
Both Foreigner And Predator linger between genres. They are science fiction, but also exciting and have horror elements, but also somehow feel like action films. But the best Foreigner And Predator Movies follow the horror format – especially the slasher format – and they all present us with a final girl (or boy).
Think about it, the movies follow the slasher pattern almost perfectly. A group gets lost in an environment, and the villain pursues them, killing them one by one until we get our hero. Foreigner gave us Ripley, Predator gave us Dutch and prey gave us Naru. AVP followed the same format, with the expedition crew dying one by one until Alexa “Lex” Woods (Sanaa Lathan) was left as the only survivor. After killing a Xenomorph, she officially proves herself to be a warrior among the Predators and helps the last remaining Yautja escape the temple.
You can classify the films however you want, but it’s clear that the films work best when they follow the slasher format. When the films try to be something else, it always seems to ruin the experience. No one wants to see humans and predators meddling with DNA, that’s not the case. Jurassic Parkand no one wants the Xenomorph’s backstory to be explored in such detail that all we have to do is watch a movie about black slime. The mystery behind the Xenomorphs and the Predators is part of what makes them so scary.
It gives the audience what it wants
AVPdespite his shortcomings, seemed to recognize that. People are watching Foreigner And Predator Films in which you are frightened by terrifying science fiction monsters. And for AVP They especially want to watch the two science fiction giants compete against each other. AVP follows a format that works, the plot is kept simple and the film is set in an entertaining and unique setting that makes you want to keep watching.
Is AVP silly and plagued with a few plot holes? Yes. Its director, Paul WS Anderson, is known for making B-movies that are lowbrow, derivative and a bit stupid. But is the film also a lot of fun and feels like a real, proper part of the Foreigner And Predator Universe? Yes. Ignore the old reviews and bad reputation Alien vs Predator was wrongly given. It’s actually a really entertaining film that you’ll enjoy, I promise.
