Drake Maye comes from a sporty family.

Born on August 30, 2002 to Mark and Aimee Maye, the UNC quarterback, who was just drafted by the New England Patriots, is the youngest of four siblings Luke, Cole and Beau.

While Maye is already making a name for himself in the NFL, his siblings have begun their own sports careers. In fact, the family’s Tar Heel tradition runs deep.

After her father played for the school’s football team from 1983 to 1988, several of Maye’s siblings played sports at the university, whose renowned alumni include Michael Jordan, Rick Fox and Julius Peppers.

When they’re not showing their love for Carolina on social media, they’re showing their support for one another. The brothers have a close bond, and Maye refers to his older siblings as his “best friends.”

Luke has quite the UNC legacy himself. He played basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels from 2015-2019 and was part of the team’s 2017 national championship win. In fact, he made headlines during the Elite 8 game when he made the game-winning jump shot with 0.3 seconds left, ultimately paving the way for their outright victory.

Speaking to ESPN, Maye said he lived in his brother’s shadow during his time at Carolina. He remembers people coming up to him and Luke when they were on campus together – but only asking Luke for a photo.

His brother Cole played baseball for Florida

Maye’s second oldest brother, Cole, took a different path in his college sports career, attending the University of Florida (although he still cheers on UNC when his brothers are there!).

After graduating early from high school in December 2016, he enrolled early at Florida before making his debut with the Florida Gators baseball team in March 2017, according to his bio on the school’s website. During his time with the team, he won an NCAA baseball title, according to Mayes’ bio on the UNC website.

They are super competitive with each other

Growing up in a family of athletes, it’s no surprise that Maye and his brothers were (and still are) very competitive as kids. In a piece for ESPN, the magazine noted that for the brothers, “everything is a competition,” from golf to pickleball.

“Having three older brothers, we try to win at everything we do,” Maye explained. “I think that’s kind of a part of who we are, and we accept it and love it.” Meanwhile, Mark noted that his son Maye was the one who always said “foul language,” and Aimee added that she thought their competition was a “good thing.”

When the New England Patriots selected Maye with the third pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the quarterback had the support of his older brothers. Not only did he have his parents and girlfriend Ann Michael Hudson by his side, but he also posed for photos with Luke, Cole and Beau.

He considers his brothers his “best friends”

Whether he’s watching his games in Carolina or celebrating when he gets selected to the Patriots, Maye’s brothers are always there for him. And the love is mutual! After being drafted, Maye said the night was extra special because he had the support of his brothers, who he called his “best friends.”

“My oldest brother Luke plays basketball in Japan. He flew back yesterday and made the trip,” he said, according to CBS. “Both my parents, my long-time girlfriend and 10 of my friends and family came yesterday as a surprise. I know they’re excited. We have a whole bunch of Patriots fans now, so I’m excited to see that.”
