An Ohio National Guard officer faces new charges for raping a child

A senior Ohio National Guard officer appeared in court Wednesday after being indicted on new charges last week.

Lieutenant Colonel Steven Vicario, 40, was initially charged with three counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of tampering with evidence.

He is now facing the same charges plus three counts of sexual assault. He had previously pleaded not guilty to all counts.

The Ohio National Guard identified him in April as a full-time National Guard employee who worked at Joint Force Headquarters as a mobilization officer. He served as commander of the 211th Maintenance Company for three years from 2013 to 2016. After his arrest, Vicario was considered to have disappeared from the force without authorization.

Delaware police officials said an adult brought her child to the police station in November after allegedly catching Vicario raping her in her Delaware home. The child was examined at two hospitals and it was determined that rapes had occurred in both October and November.

The prosecution stated that body swabs taken from the victim “matched his DNA.”

Vicario’s bail was initially set at $500,000, but was reduced to $300,000 in May. On Wednesday, a judge ordered the same conditions as before.

Vicario’s trial is currently scheduled for December 17.
