Animal shelter hosts free adoption event “Clear the Shelter”

In less than four days, the Gaston County Animal Care and Control Department has taken in 28 dogs, most of them strays, and that portion of the shelter is still full.

“That’s kind of the battle we’re fighting. That’s what hurts us and why we’re so booked all the time,” said office manager Elizabeth Henderson.

An event on September 7 could help change that.

What is that?

The Clear the Shelters event is held annually and celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. On September 7th, all adoptions at the shelter are free and shelter staff will approve potential adopters on site.

“It’s a big celebration for us because the goal is to clear the shelters. Of course, all kinds of vendors line our streets on that day,” said Henderson. “We give out lots of gifts, give away lots of baskets and things like that. It’s just a big day when we find our animals the loving homes they deserve.”

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., but attendees can line up earlier if they wish, Henderson said.

For people who need pre-approval to adopt, there is an online link, and prospective adopters can come to the shelter in person and apply, Henderson said. The application will ask for references from landlords and veterinarians, and the process will go smoothly if those references are readily available.

How can I help?

You can’t adopt? The animal shelter is looking for foster homes.

“We always need more foster parents, so if you are looking for a foster home, we would love to have more foster parents and volunteers,” Henderson said.

In addition, people from the community can volunteer to walk the dogs.

“If you want to do something as a family, we have a wonderful hiking program. That always helps to get the kids outside and give them something to do,” she said.
