Vueling is running a competition to celebrate Tomatina, the world’s largest tomato throwing festival in Spain. In this competition, passengers can enter Vueling’s prize draw to win free flights to Valencia and tickets to the food battle festival. The Tomatina festival will take place on August 28, 2024 in Buñol, just 38 kilometers outside of Valencia.

What’s in a name?

In this competition, the names of the passengers are what count. According to the Spanish low-cost airline “Couples, friends or family members in the UK who are called Tom and Tina – or a variation thereof, such as ValentinA or Tino”, can win free flights to Valencia.

The IAG-owned airline is offering four pairs of flights and tickets, so the tickets cannot be won individually. Instead, to enter the prize draw, two people with similar names, such as Tom or Tina, must enter together.

Entering the competition is simple and straightforward. Passengers must provide their full name, departure airport and email address. Winners will be flown out of London Gatwick Airport (LGW) the day before the festival begins (27 August). Winners can choose their return flight date so they can experience the city of Valencia.

The festival organizers expect that 22,000 food fighters will take part in the Tomatina and a fleet of six trucks will bring 120 tons of tomatoes from Extremadura to the festival in Buñol.

Vueling celebrates its 20th anniversary

The news of the free flight competition comes just as Vueling celebrates its 20th anniversary as Spain’s first low-cost airline. To celebrate the 20th anniversary, Vueling held a special event at Barcelona’s Tibidabo amusement park. The event featured the iconic Tibidabo aircraft painted yellow and Lío Ibiza performed in honor of Vueling’s first destination.

In the summer following its creation, Vueling began operations with two Airbus A320 aircraft flying between Barcelona and Ibiza, a holiday island in the Mediterranean. The airline’s name is composed of the Spanish word “vuelo” and the English ending “-ing”.

Over these years, Vueling, a member of the International Airlines Group (IAG), has become Spain’s second largest airline after Iberia. Based at Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), Vueling has carried over 352 million passengers and is responsible for 40% of annual traffic at BCN Airport, according to a report by independent brand consultancy Saffron.
