Assam: Students take initiative to repair crumbling National Highway 37 in Doomdooma

The deteriorating condition of National Highway 37 in Doomdooma town of Tinsukia district has caused great frustration among the people and prompted a grassroots response by the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP).

The Doomdooma Regional Committee of this nationalist youth organisation stepped in where the government’s measures were not sufficient and organised a Shramdaan to improve the critical road conditions.

Today, members of the AJYCP rolled up their sleeves and took to the streets to repair the highway themselves. Their action came in the wake of growing anger at the Public Works Department (PWD) for failing to fix the dangerous condition of this crucial road. The AJYCP has urged the authorities to expedite the repair and reconstruction of National Highway 37, a lifeline that runs through the heart of Doomdooma town.

The neglect of this major thoroughfare has a significant impact on the local community, causing daily hardships to both commuters and residents. This situation has also triggered a wider wave of discontent, leading to various political and social organizations organizing peaceful protests to demand urgent action.

Doomdooma residents have expressed their gratitude and admiration for the efforts of the AJYCP. The student body’s initiative to fill the potholes with stones has been welcomed as a necessary measure that will provide temporary relief to those who rely on the highway for their daily commute. However, the call for a permanent solution is growing louder as the town awaits a comprehensive response from the authorities.
