Astrology of Free Will – The Santa Barbara Independent

ARIES

(March 21 – April 19): Some centenarians claim they lived for more than a century because they smoked a lot of cigarettes, drank a lot of alcohol, and ate a steady diet of junk food. Should the rest of us adopt their habits? Of course not. The chances of staying healthy on such an unhealthy diet are vanishingly small. Just because a few lucky people miraculously succeeded is no valid argument to emulate them. I’m bringing this to your attention, Aries, because the coming weeks will be an excellent opportunity to strengthen your commitment to healthy habits. If you’ve been waiting for the right time to love your body more, it’s now.

BULL

(April 20 – May 20): Taurus stage magician Doug Henning had big ambitions. These served him well as he became a star in theater and television. “If I produce a 400-pound Bengal tiger,” he said, “it will do far more wonder than if I produce a rabbit.” That’s the attitude I want you to adopt in the coming weeks, Taurus. The cosmos is empowering you to expand your understanding of what you can achieve – and then achieve it. Dream bigger dreams than you’ve ever dared before.

TWINS

(21 May – 20 June): The color of planet Earth is predominantly blue with green, brown, and white in between. And for people around the world, blue is more often their favorite color than any other. Why? Partly because blue typically exudes peace, calm, security, and stability. It’s often used in therapeutic settings as it makes us feel more able to express our feelings more easily. I bring these thoughts to your attention, Gemini, because you’re entering a blue phase of your cycle. It will be an opportune time to reap the benefits of relaxation and slowing down. You’ll be more likely to feel comfortable in your own skin and accept yourself as you are.

CANCER

(21 June – 22 July): Gerald Zaltman, a professor at Harvard Business School and born under the sign of Cancer, says that 95 percent of our purchasing decisions are made in our subconscious. Behavioral psychologist Susan Weinschenk believes that 90 percent of all our decisions are made unconsciously. However, I suggest that you weigh your options more consciously in the coming weeks. The cosmic energies will conspire in your favor if you do so. You will receive unexpected impulses and increase your creativity if you resolve to develop more clear analysis and careful thoughtfulness.

LION

(July 23 – August 22): A wealthy hedge fund manager named Raj Rajaratnam paid Leo singer Kenny Rogers $4 million to perform at his grandiose birthday party. But the evening turned into a nightmare for Rogers when Rajaratnam insisted that he sing his hit “The Gambler” over and over again. Finally, after 12 repetitions, Rogers refused to continue. I wonder if you too might soon face a situation where too much of a good thing is too much. My advice: Make sure that all agreements between you and others are clear and binding. Get guarantees that you will get exactly what you want, and don’t give more than you promised.

VIRGO

(August 23 – September 22): From time to time, zoologists decide that their classifications of species need to be revised and refined. For example, three subspecies of soft-furred, teardrop-shaped hedgehogs in Southeast Asia were recently elevated to separate species. They are no longer considered subspecies of Hylomys suillusbut now called H. dorsalis, H. maxiAnd H. peguensis. I bring this to your attention, Virgo, because I suspect that you, too, are ready for a promotion into a new category all your own. It’s time for you to claim more sovereignty. You would do well to define how distinctive and unique you are in order to separate yourself from influences that are superficially similar to you.

SCALE

(23 September – 22 October): When mega-famous artist Pablo Picasso was asked what he thought about NASA landing men on the moon in 1969, he said, “It means nothing to me. I have no opinion on it and I don’t care.” I invite you to use his statement as one of your power mottos in the coming weeks. Now is an excellent time to identify the experiences, influences, events and people you have absolutely no interest in. Once you do that, I predict you will have a flood of clear revelations about the most interesting experiences, influences, events and people you want to have in your future.

SCORPIO

(23 Oct.-21 Nov.): The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu made an observation that might serve as your motto in the coming months. “To be loved deeply by someone gives you strength,” he wrote, “and to love someone deeply gives you courage.” In my astrological opinion, you, Scorpio, are now best equipped to embody and express these states with unique intensity. If you accept the inspiring challenge to love deeply and be loved deeply, you will reach new heights of strength and courage.

PROTECT

(November 22 – December 21): Many musical instruments require constant tuning to stay in tune. This usually means that the note A above middle C vibrates at 440 cycles per second—and all other notes are tuned in proportion to that. Having sung in bands for years, I’ve seen guitarists, bassists, violinists, and even drummers constantly have to pay attention to their tuning during performances. Imagine the careful finesse required to keep an entire orchestra of many instruments in tune. I suspect that one of your tasks in the coming weeks, Sagittarius, will bear similarities to this kind of management and coordination.

CAPRICORN

(December 22 – January 19): Dancing is always good for you, but it will be especially healthy and energizing over the next four weeks. I hope you’ll be inspired to dance as often as you can, even if it’s just by yourself in your kitchen or bedroom while listening to music that moves you. Need rational explanations for why this is a good idea? OK, here are the hard facts: Dancing reduces stress, increases serotonin levels, increases well-being, and is excellent physical exercise. Here’s another motivating reason: Dancing literally makes you smarter. Scientific research says so clearly (tinyurl.com/SmartDancing). Also, in the near future, you will be in a playful, sexy, exuberant phase of your astrological cycle.

AQUARIUS

(January 20 – February 18):What does nata mean?” is the Latin phrase for “What is your zodiac sign?” Did anyone ever say that in ancient Rome? Probably not, as it is a modern idiom. However, astrology was very popular in that society and era. According to scholar Rhianna Padman in her essay “Astrology in Ancient Rome,” the Romans believed that the specific positions of the heavenly bodies at the time of a person’s birth could greatly influence his life and character. At the time, Thrasyllus of Mendes was a prominent astrologer who became an important advisor to Emperor Tiberius. Anyway, Aquarius, I bring “What does nata mean?” to inspire you to do the following: Update all your old favorite things. Put a new spin on symbols and ideas that have served you well for a long time. Take the best parts of your traditions and carry them forward into the future.

FISH

(February 19 – March 20): The coming weeks are an excellent opportunity to declare amnesty for all matters involving your close allies. Please put aside grudges. Argue less, play more. Relax your demands and expectations—and politely ask your companions to relax theirs. If possible, forgive others and yourself for everything; failing that, forgive as much of everything as feels right. You might even convene a ritual where you and your close associates chant the following affirmation: “We are joyfully free to rethink and reinvent the way we fit together!”
