Athlete safety in extreme heat at Wayne High School

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – 21Country student-athletes will be training hard during the next few days, even during the extreme heat.

Wayne High School is one of many schools in the area taking extra measures to ensure the safety of their athletes during this dangerous weather.

Assistant football coach Robert Paschall says, “We just try to protect them at all times. We just want to make sure that none of our players suffer from heat stroke or heat exhaustion.”

Paschall has been coaching for nearly 40 years – he knows the importance of keeping athletes safe in the heat. He says, “If they’re dizzy or nauseous or just don’t look good, we have our coaches and stuff, and we try to have a tub of cool water ready for them.”

During practice this week, coaches will give players extra breaks and provide them with plenty of extra water.

“We try to keep a close eye on them to make sure we don’t have any problems or anything like that in this heat, and we always have a trainer nearby,” says Paschall. He continues, “We’re proud of our players for being able to come out here in these conditions, but we always tell them to drink a lot before they go out.”
