August 17: Parties, shows, activities

play

The theme of Carnival week in Provincetown is “Renaissance x Revolution”.

The tip of Cape Cod is expected to be full of rainbows, feathers, big hairstyles and plenty of costumes with nods to Marie Antoinette and Beyoncé next week.

The 2024 Carnival will take place August 17-24. In addition to the highly anticipated parade on August 22 along Commercial Street (no beads!), the week will feature pool parties, dance parties, drag queen shows, opportunities to dress up and a boat cruise, to name just a few of the festive summer activities.

We provide you with an up-to-date list of activities for each day of Carnival.

Here are some of the events planned for today:

Register for the Feet over Front Street 5K Run and Walk

The run/march to benefit the Provincetown Business Guild will be held on Sunday, August 18, but you can register online at https://runsignup.com/Race/MA/Provincetown/FeetOverFrontStreetCarnivalRunWalk. Registration closes at 8:20 a.m. on August 18.

Participants will meet at the Harbor Hotel at 698 Commercial Street between 7:00 and 8:15 a.m. on August 18. The route will run the entire length of Commercial Street (formerly Front Street) to the Provincetown Inn and will include the entire length of MacMillian Pier, according to the Carnival website.

Strollers, dogs and costumes are welcome.

The run is $55 and the walk is $35. For more information and to register, visit https://runsignup.com/Race/MA/Provincetown/FeetOverFrontStreetCarnivalRunWalk.

Go kayaking or paddleboarding – or try yoga

Coyote Kayaks, located at 333R Commercial St., Unit 1, offers several paddleboard and kayak excursions from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day during Carnival. Rental options include Bayside, the Salt Marsh Eco Tour and “Boy Beach Paddle.”

The Yoga Joint, located at the same address as Coyote Kayaks, offers classes every morning.

Watch a show – or three

It looks like there will be no less than 16 shows to see on August 17 alone, ranging from comedy to theater to music.

At 7pm, you can choose between “Edie: Queen of the Desert” in the Red Room or “The Comparable Dina Martina” at the Crown & Anchor. The “sensational drag experience” “Diva: This is your anthem – A Show of Empowerment” takes place at 7.30pm with Delta Miles, Roxy Pops and Qya Cristal, also at the Crown & Anchor. “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” is shown at 7.30pm at the Fishermen Hall. A tribute to Freddy Mercury begins at 9pm at the Pilgrim House, while “Fruit Basket: Queer Comedy Showcase” runs at the same time at the Crown & Anchor.

Go dancing

The Boatslip Resort and Beach Club hosts a dance party every day of Carnival except Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at 161 Commercial St. Both Saturdays of Carnival (August 17 and 24) feature the Dog-Tag Tea Dance with DJ Mary Alice. The event description suggests black, green, camouflage, a harness and boots.

There’s also Topside with DJ Lizzy Pitch on Saturdays at the Underground Bar at 293 Commercial St. from 10pm to 1am.
