Banish garden weeds forever with mom’s “cheap and easy” trick

With the summer season just around the corner, many of us are spending as much time as possible in our gardens – at least those who are lucky enough to own one. It’s important to keep them looking as good as possible.

Countless homeowners devote many hours to tending their gardens, from removing dead roses and mowing the lawn to protecting against slug infestations. However, a constant thorn in every gardener’s side is the inexorable return of weeds.

Not only are weeds an eyesore, they also steal vital water and nutrients from other plants. They’ve been known to sprout between paving stones and potentially destabilise patios by dislodging slabs. However, one gardening enthusiast has revealed a brilliant yet affordable trick to banish weeds for good.

Ellie Paige shared her discovery on TikTok: “The best solution to get rid of weeds in the garden once and for all.” The clever mum simply sprinkled soda crystals, which are available in most supermarkets for around £2, over the weeds.

She then swept them into every nook and cranny with her garden brush, warning others to avoid contact with grass as it could be damaged by the crystals, and then sprayed the area with a hose to dissolve the soda crystals.

Ellie showed some “dead” weeds that she had treated with the product “a few weeks ago,” and noted that while they still need to be pulled out, she doesn’t expect them to come back. “See how they’re all dead? Not a single patch has grown back,” she concluded.

Sharing her budget-friendly weed control tip, the content writer revealed that she bought the soda crystals from Home Bargains and noticed they were “so cheap.” She advised: “Wait a couple of days and then they should all be dead.”

In the comments, one user warned of the potential danger to pets from this approach, writing: “It works, but please be careful if you have pets. Their paws will be badly injured, glyphosate will harm them.”

Other eager social media users expressed their excitement to test the hack, with one agreeing, “Thanks, I’ll try that,” while another commented, “Great idea!”.

A third person recommended: “Take a watering can, mix the product with water and pour it on the weeds.” Some suggested trying other methods – such as boiling water and table salt. One person wrote: “”.

Others suggested alternative solutions such as boiling water and table salt. One commenter suggested: “Cheap table salt does the same thing. Don’t pour it though, just let it sit dry until it rains.”
