The Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) is urging merchants and consumers to be vigilant after two bank card skimmers were discovered in local stores last week, according to a CCPD press release.
The skimmers can steal financial information from a debit or credit card. According to the press release, the skimmers were discovered last week at both the Kroger store at 5720 Ogeechee Road and the Kroger store at 95 Johnny Mercer Blvd.
Card skimmers look similar to traditional card readers, but are slightly thicker and may not have the protective keypad.

“Because the differences are so subtle and may not be immediately apparent to customers, merchants are urged to regularly check their card readers to ensure they have not been tampered with,” the CCPD press release said. “Customers should also be extra vigilant and watch for any indication that a card reader has been replaced with a fraudulent card reader.”
The CCPD urges customers who frequently visit these locations to review their credit card transactions and notify their bank of any suspicious account activity.
Anyone with information about who may be responsible for the card skimmers is asked to contact police. Anonymous tips can be submitted through the Chatham County Police Department app or the department’s online tip form, which can be found here: police.chathamcountyga.gov/Tips.
