Batavia opens cooling center during extreme heat warning – Shaw Local

The City of Batavia has implemented temporary cooling operations in response to the National Weather Service’s heat warning in effect until tomorrow evening.

The extreme heat warning comes into effect at 12:00 noon on August 26 and will remain in effect until 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27.

The cooling center will be open at Batavia City Hall (100 N. Island Ave.) to serve the elderly, families with young children and other vulnerable residents.

The cooling center will be open 24 hours a day, but will not have sleeping accommodations, special hygiene or washing facilities, or refrigerators for storing food.

Anyone using the facility should register at the Batavia Police Department reception upon arrival.

According to a news release from Batavia Police, extreme temperatures can be extremely dangerous, especially for the elderly, infants and young children, people with disabilities and those taking medications for chronic illnesses.

Residents who have friends, neighbors or relatives at risk should be encouraged to check on them regularly.

Anyone with specific questions about the city’s cooling center should call Batavia Police at 630-454-2500.
