Beach cleaning machines need to be repaired

Some of the beach cleaning machines of the Greater Chennai Corporation are not in good shape, according to higher authorities, as the comb that catches the waste is rusted and unusable. The inspection will begin soon, said Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran.

The cleaning work was carried out using nine machines – five at Marina Beach, three at Besant Nagar Beach and one at Palavakkam Beach. According to the Mechanical Engineering Department, these machines were deployed as per the requirement of the respective zones, based on requests from the assistant engineers.

“There are five machines for Marina Beach. Four of the five machines have 90% damage to the comb that collects garbage, debris and rubble from the beach sand. There is no point in running this machine on the beach as it does not collect garbage or debris. These machines need to be replaced,” the official explained.

S. Thanigaivel, 40, a resident of Triplicane, said one machine for Besant Nagar Beach was being used in the early hours every day, which was not enough, and suggested that it should be used at least three times a day. The assistant engineer in charge declined to comment on the issue.

J. Kumaragurubaran, Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation, said officials concerned have been asked to take steps to repair the machines.
