Bernard Wayne Hetzel

Bernard Hetzel, 82, of Tavares, FL, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 8, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.

Wayne was born on November 23, 1941, at St. Mary’s Hospital in West Palm Beach to Bernard and Florence Hetzel and attended St. Ann Catholic School from kindergarten through 12th grade. In high school, he began working with his father and brother at Hetzel Brothers Construction. After receiving his contractor’s license, Wayne started his own construction company, which he operated successfully for nearly 60 years.

Wayne’s family became known in the 1950’s through the early 80’s for the Hetzel Brothers Pageants, which began in Curry Park and later moved to a location on Northlake Blvd. Although the pageant was discontinued in 1983 following the death of Wayne’s brother Bob, the treasured memories continue to warm the hearts of those who have experienced the tradition of these inspiring events during the Christmas and Easter seasons.

Known as the “gentle giant,” Wayne had a unique ability to make people feel welcome and appreciated. His kindness and gentlemanly nature were evident in his interactions, always willing to lend a helping hand and a listening ear. Even in his final days, he cared for others and frequently asked his family and caregivers, “How are you today?”

Wayne taught his family that the most valuable thing in life is not money or accolades, but time spent with loved ones. Time to listen, to talk, to enjoy. When God created Wayne, He threw away the mold. He will be missed more than words can express, for he had an unparalleled gift for making others feel valued.

He was predeceased by his father Bernard Hetzel, mother Florence Hetzel, sister Bernadine Gleason and brother Robert Hetzel. He is survived by his wife Carole; children Margie Wheeler, Steven Hetzel and Yvette Salerno; grandchildren Gage & Bryson Mooring, Brooke Hetzel and Dalton & Danielle Salerno; great-grandchildren Ryder & Davis and Rhodes Mooring (first great-granddaughter due in September); stepson Sean Meehan and step-grandson Jack Meehan.
