Better Boundaries Utah protests changes to ballot initiatives

SALT LAKE CITY – Days after the Utah State Legislature voted yes, hundreds of people gathered at the Capitol and urged Utahns to vote against proposed ballot initiative changes.

The rally is part of the “Vote No” campaign, which Better Boundaries Utah calls.

Supporters waved signs with slogans like “All power to the people” and “Keep democracy.” Better Boundaries board member Ryan Bell told the hundreds in attendance that there is one principle in the Constitution that will never change.

“All political power lies with the people,” he said.

When asked if there were concerns about funding from the opposing side, Executive Director Katie Wright acknowledged that lawmakers had been strategic in their message and thanked supporters for donating to their cause.

“Our constitutional rights are sacred and we will not surrender them to politicians who think they know better than we, the voters,” she said.

Senator Daniel Thatcher was one of the few Republicans to vote against the bill across party lines, telling people at the rally that their vote was not about personal feelings toward Parliament or political ideology.

“The question before us is: is there a limit? Either there is a limit and it is this sensible limit, or there is no limit and we abandon the last bastion forever,” said Senator Thatcher.
