Bevin Cohen gives tomato tips at the Huron County Nature Center

Tomatoes are great, right? From ketchup to BLTs and pizza sauce to salads, tomatoes are an important ingredient in our favorite foods. But how much do you know about the complex history of this delicious fruit?

Author and seed rescuer Bevin Cohen knows a lot about it and will share stories about how this South American fruit “traveled around the world and back, influencing the cuisines and cultures of the many countries it passed through on its journey” on Saturday, August 17, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Huron County Nature Center, according to a press release.

Anyone with a green thumb should join in, as Cohen will share tips and tricks to maximize your tomato harvest, including how to harvest tomato seeds. A selection of unique heirloom tomatoes will be available to sample. The event is free, but a goodwill donation “will be gladly accepted.”

“From heritage varieties to hybrids, there is so much to learn about growing, caring for and deliciously using tomatoes in the kitchen,” said Jim Warchall, president of the nature center. “We look forward to Bevin’s presentation.”

An award-winning author, herbalist, owner of Small House Farm, and host of the popular podcast Seeds and Weeds, Cohen offers workshops and talks across the country on the benefits of living in harmony with nature through seeds, herbs, and locally grown foods.

He is also a food and gardening writer whose work has appeared in numerous publications such as Mother Earth News and Homestead Living Magazine, and is the author or editor of more than 10 books, including “Saving Our Seeds” and “Grow Great Vegetables in Michigan.” For more information about his work, visit www.bevincohen.com.

The Huron County Nature Center at 3336 Loosemore Road east of Oak Beach Road at Tip of the Thumb offers hiking and biking trails that are open 365 days a year.
